About UM

Maastricht University (UM) is a widely recognised public university in the Netherlands that just celebrated its 50th birthday. It is known for its strong focus on problem-based learning, interdisciplinary education, and a highly international student community. Often referred to as the “European University of the Netherlands,” it connects research and teaching closely to societal challenges and collaborates extensively with regional, European, and global partners. UM aims to empower students to become critical, globally minded thinkers while contributing to society through innovative and socially relevant research and education across fields such as health, law, economics, science, and social sciences.

The Cardiovascular Research Institute Maastricht (CARIM) is dedicated to advancing fundamental and translational knowledge in cardiovascular disease. It focuses on understanding the basic mechanisms of cardiac, vascular, and circulatory function, integrating molecular, cellular, and systems-level approaches. Its mission is to generate high-quality scientific insights that improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, while also training the next generation of researchers and clinicians in a collaborative, internationally oriented environment.
